Understanding the Difference: Caulking vs Silicone

Choosing the right product is essential to achieving a durable and professional finish.

The key difference between caulking and sealants lies in elasticity. Traditional caulks become rigid once dry and are best suited to areas with little to no movement. Sealants, most commonly silicone-based, remain flexible, making them ideal for areas exposed to expansion, contraction, moisture and temperature changes.

Silicone sealants are widely used to prevent the passage of water and air. Common types include acetoxy cure, oxime cure and alcoxy cure. Acetoxy cure silicones are typically used internally, while oxime and alcoxy cures are better suited to external environments.
