7 of the Most Sustainable Buildings All Around Australia

Australian CBDs are now being populated by green buildings, making these areas even more beautiful and the people happier and healthier. Aside from the aesthetic boost these green buildings give, it is believed that they help boost mental health too. Here are some of the top green buildings in the country:

1. One Central Park in Sydney

Sydney is a huge suburban area, which makes people feel a bit congested in the area. Therefore, One Central Park was built, a Five Green Star-rated building with east and west residential apartment towers to make the area less stuffy. There are hydronic plants that are so lush on the building’s facade. The site’s blackwater recycling infrastructure nurtures these plants.  The building has heliostats designed to direct sunlight and heat to certain areas that need them during the day.

2. Ingkarni Wardli Building in Adelaide

Ingkarni Wardli is an education facility built for the Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Adelaide.  The internal temperature is regulated by sun-shading louvres and thermal chimneys, while the rooftop tri-generation plant powers the entire facility. The water used in toilets and irrigation from rainwater is harvested into 500,000-litre underground tanks.

3. Burwood Brickworks in Melbourne

Retail therapy has never been this green. Go shopping at Burwood Brickworks, then head on over to the rooftop farm. The shopping complex captures and re-uses the water it needs, such as the water for the rooftop farm. Furthermore, you’re going to love the over 200 citrus trees on the northern facade.

4. 25 King Street in Brisbane

25 King Street is the tallest timber tower in the country. It has nine levels made of recycled or glue-laminated timber structural beams and columns, along with cross-laminated timber floors. The pre-formed engineered timber construction saves 40% of energy.

5. CH2 in Melbourne

CH2 in Melbourne has well-designed interiors to maximise natural light. Its air intake is 100% filtered outside air. Meanwhile, in the roof garden, the ratio of indoor plants is one plant per person.  The building is the first one that received Australia’s first Six Star Green Star rating. It is also one of the world’s healthiest commercial indoor workplaces.

6. Barangaroo South in Sydney

Barangaroo South is the country’s first carbon-neutral community and is currently the most sustainable office building. The water here is recycled on-site and used for irrigation and toilet flushing. This is also why it’s considered water positive.

7. Council House 2 in Melbourne

Council House 2 has a gas-powered cogeneration plant that produces enough electricity to fulfil 30% of the building’s needs. There are also 23 solar panels that power 60% of its hot water requirements. Furthermore, it has wind turbines to produce additional electricity.
